Why convert files to Markdown before uploading to AI?
When you drop a PDF into ChatGPT or Claude, the file isn't read the way you read it. To understand charts, photos and layout, the AI processes every page as an image as well as text. Anthropic's own documentation puts a 3-page PDF at roughly 7,000 tokens processed that way — against about 1,000 tokens for the same pages as extracted text. That's a 7× difference before you've asked a single question, and it comes straight out of your context window and your usage limits.
A Markdown file skips the image processing entirely. It's plain text, so the only tokens you pay for are the words themselves — while headings, lists and tables survive as structure the AI can still follow. A long report that fills a chat's context as a PDF often fits comfortably as a .md file, with room left for the conversation.

Why is my PDF so expensive to upload to an AI chat?

AI chats process PDF pages as images as well as text so they can read charts and layout. Per Anthropic's documentation, that multiplies the token cost roughly sevenfold versus plain extracted text. Markdown is plain text, so it skips the image cost entirely.
Will tables and headings survive the conversion?
