Google Sheets to Markdown table
Two steps: download your Sheet as Excel or CSV, drop it below. Every tab becomes a clean Markdown table with formulas resolved — free, in your browser, nothing uploaded.

How to convert a Google Sheet to Markdown
- In Google Sheets, download the spreadsheet: File → Download → Microsoft Excel (.xlsx). That keeps every tab. (Comma-separated values .csv also works, but exports only the tab you're currently viewing.)
- Drop the downloaded file into the box above. It's converted on your own device — the data never leaves your machine, which for spreadsheets is usually the whole point.
- Copy the Markdown tables or download the .md — into ChatGPT, Claude, a README, Notion, Obsidian or anywhere else Markdown goes.
Why the download step? (And what a .gsheet file really is)
A Google Sheet isn't a file on your computer — it lives in Google's cloud, and no website can reach into your Google account to read it (nor should you want one that tries). Tools promising one-click Sheets access are asking for account permissions; this converter deliberately doesn't. The download step is the price of your spreadsheet never touching anyone's server, including ours.
About those .gsheet files on your computer: if you use Google Drive for desktop, you'll see files ending in .gsheet — but they are shortcuts, a few bytes holding a link, not the spreadsheet itself. Drop one here and the converter will tell you exactly that, with the download path to use instead. It's the most common surprise in spreadsheet conversion, and now you're ahead of it.
A real example
This is actual converter output for a two-tab spreadsheet of exactly the kind Sheets exports — monthly metrics with a =SUM() total, plus a pricing tab:
## Sheet: Growth | Month | Signups | Churn | | --- | --- | --- | | June | 240 | 12 | | July | 310 | 9 | | August | 405 | 14 | | Total | 955 | | ## Sheet: Pricing | Plan | Price | | --- | --- | | Free | 0 | | Pro | 12 |
Both tabs arrive as named sections, and the formula row shows its computed value — 955, not "=SUM(B2:B4)". Ask the AI about "the Pricing tab" and it knows which table you mean.
Sheets-specific tips
XLSX for many tabs, CSV for one. The Excel download carries the whole workbook; the CSV download is only the active tab. If you keep converting one tab of a big Sheet, CSV is the smaller, faster choice.
IMPORTRANGE and app-connected data come along as values. The download freezes whatever the Sheet showed at that moment — live-updating cells become their current values, which is exactly what an AI conversation needs anyway. Reconvert when the data changes.
Trim before you export. Helper columns, old tabs and scratch areas all convert faithfully — including the ones you forgot about. A quick cleanup in Sheets is the cheapest token saving available.
Google Sheets questions
Can I paste a Google Sheets link instead of downloading?
▼
No, and that's a feature: reading a Sheet by link requires access to your Google account, and this converter runs entirely in your browser with no account access at all. The two-step download keeps your data yours.
Is it free?
▼
Yes — free and unlimited, no sign-up. Conversion happens on your device, so there's nothing for us to meter.
Does my spreadsheet get uploaded?
▼
No. The downloaded file is parsed by JavaScript in your browser. Budgets, client lists and salary sheets never touch a server — ours or anyone's.
I dropped a .gsheet file and got an error — why?
▼
A .gsheet file is a Google Drive shortcut: a link to the spreadsheet, not the spreadsheet. Open the Sheet in your browser and use File → Download → Microsoft Excel (.xlsx), then convert that download.
Do formulas from my Sheet convert?
▼
As their computed values — the same numbers you see in the Sheet. The formula text itself isn't carried over.
What about Google Docs and Slides?
▼
Same pattern: File → Download → Word (.docx) or PowerPoint (.pptx), then use our Word or PowerPoint converters. Google Docs can also export Markdown directly (File → Download → Markdown), which is worth trying first for plain documents.
